An Exploration of Counselling Identity in Counsellors who deal with Trauma
Selwyn Black, B.Ed., M.Sc. & Peter Weinreich, Ph.D.
Introduction -
This research explored some of the ways in which counsellors construct their identity
when, in the aftermath of a traumatic event, they are exposed to the trauma of their
clients. The research investigated the impact of counselling traumatised victims and
the possible resulting experience of 'vicarious traumatisation' on the sense of
identity on those counsellors using Identity Structure Analysis. Semi-structured
informal interviews together with IDEX (Identity Exploration for Windows, V3.0) were
used to analyse the issues of the impact of vicarious traumatisation on respondents'
interpersonal relationships, the reverberation between previous traumatic experiences
on current therapeutic practice, and how the respondents' professional orientation
with regard to belief and value systems was influenced upon exposure to the trauma
of their clients. The results show that vicarious traumatisation has a marked impact
on both empathetic and conflicted identifications, that previous traumatic experiences
have both positive and negative influences on current therapeutic practice, and that
counsellors are likely to experience shifts in their belief and value systems as a
consequence of trauma's after-shocks. The results have implications for the caring
professions, counsellors who are involved in trauma work, and managers who have
responsibility for the supervision and care of trauma counsellors.

Secondary Traumatic Stress Among Child Protective Service Workers:
Prevalence, Severity and Predictive Factors

BThomas A. Cornille & Tracy Woodard Meyers
Abstract
This study assesses the prevalence and severity of secondary traumatic stress (STS)
symptoms among a sample of southern child protective service (CPS) workers. Using
a survey research design, up to 37% of the respondents were found to be experiencing
clinical levels of emotional distress associated with STS. In addition, levels of
work exposure and work related personal trauma were found to be strongly associated with the presence
of those symptoms. Preventive and interventive strategies to address these findings
are suggested.

A Phenomenological Study of Vicarious Traumatisation
Amongst Psychologists and Professional Counsellors
Working in the Field of Sexual Abuse/Assault

Lyndall G Steed and Robyn Downing, School of Psychology, Curtin University of Technology,
Perth, Western Australia.
Abstract
In the past decade the field of traumatology has expanded to incorporate vicarious
traumatisation (VT); the impact on the therapist of exposure to traumatic client material.
This study was designed to investigate the VT effects experienced by therapists who
work with sexual abuse/assault survivors. Twelve psychologists and professional
counsellors participated in semi-structured interviews which explored their responses
to hearing traumatic material, perceived effects of VT, alterations in their cognitive
schemata and their coping strategies. Findings indicated that therapists experience a
variety of severe negative effects which may have a pervasive impact on their functioning
in both personal and professional domains. However, positive sequelae were also noted,
and thus it is suggested that our conceptualisation of VT may be limited. The need to
educate therapists about the potential impact of VT and possible coping and preventive
strategies is highlighted.

'Vicarious Trauma' Supporting the TRC Staff
psychologist Trudy de Ridder
Abstract
'Vicarious traumatisation' is the name the psychological profession gives to the
phenomenon of becoming traumatised by extended or intense exposure to the trauma of others.
For briefers, debriefers, interpreters, statement-takers, researchers, commissioners,
investigators and a range of other TRC staff members, exposure to the trauma of others
has been intense and extended over the last 18 months. Add to this the constant litany
of horror about the human capacity for torture, murder, mutilation, necklacing,
stoning - and you have a vicious cocktail that would cause any normal-functioning
human being intense emotional stress.
